This past Saturday morning I woke up with an urge. I looked out my window, saw the sun shining and thought to myself, "what a perfect day for shopping...I'm going to stop by Karmaloop". I jumped out of my bed, showered, had a bite to eat and started on my way to what I thought was going to be a fun-filled, street wear laden day of excessive spending. On my way to the store, I checked twitter to see if @karmaloopboston might have tweeted anything regarding new items or sales. I saw a mention of up to 75% off of remaining women's wear items and almost lost my mind! "How could this be?" I thought to myself...

Once I finally arrived at the store on Newbury street, I opened the door and headed straight to the back.

I looked to my left and then to my right.

I looked at the table in the middle of the room. There, I saw 3 small bins with what looked like t-shirts in them.

I thought to myself, "maybe they moved the woman's merchandise...but where could they have moved it to...?"

I slowly walked back to the front of the store, looked around again and then asked a sales person, "where might I find the women's wear?"

He replied "in the back...in those 3 bins on the table".

For a moment, I think I may have blacked out. His response kind of echoed in my ears and through my mind and I'm sure the look on my face expressed complete shock and disgust at the very idea that Karmaloop would dare to no longer carry woman's clothing in their retail location.

Had they no idea of how I looked forward to visiting the store upon occasion, instead of clicking through the pages of their site, looking for new gear to wrap around my body?!

I felt betrayed.

Had yet another street wear boutique in Boston turned a cold shoulder to the women in this city?

Would I now be forced to do all my shopping online and be forever banished from the store that I loved so much?!

I gasp still at the very idea.

Karmaloop, why hath thou forsaken me!?

I promise on all that is good in the world, I listened to this cd EVERY morning before school for a year straight when I lived in Texas in 1994 & 1995. I miss music like this...it just felt good and the video was fun. Music today is really missing something.

But this song still brings back great memories.

Boston, which houses one of the largest Haitian communities outside of the actual country, is coming together to support their people in various ways.

This event is one example of that.

It is said that everything isn't always as it seems and that statement may hold true in certain situations. At other times, it couldn't be further from the truth. Case in point...Rochester-born emcee Emilio Rojas. Upon first glace, you will see freshly dressed 20 something year old man with quite a bit of classic style. Upon first listen, you will hear the words of a confident, politically aware and quite clever lyricist with healthy appetite for the opposite sex. Rojas is everything that he appears to be and it comes of almost effortlessly, which makes a great deal of sense for someone who's latest offering is titled "The Natural". PM Live's Marlene was able to connect with Emilio and discuss what its like to present yourself exactly as you are in a profession that has a great deal of artificial additives.

After listening to the most recent collaboration between the good people of Strong Arm Steady and The Beat Konducta, Madlib, one might wonder if California, often refereed to as the "Golden State", might have received its nickname as a credit to the seemingly unlimited amount of radiant emcees / musicians that continue to emerge from there.

Strong Arm Steady began with what many may consider a "who's who" of the West's underground / independent scene, including Krondon, Phil Da Agony, Mitchy Slick, DJ Truly OdD, Xzibit, DJ Khalil, Chase Infinite and Planet Asia, all whom have garnered a high level of support and respect for their individual contributions to hip hop, in the US and overseas. The group currently consists of three "official members" - Krondon, Phil Da Agony and Mitchy Slick, who have come to represent a new era of West Coast hip hop with a style, feel and sound much different from what music fans had previously encountered with one of California's most well known hip hop labels, Death Row Records...

On November 8th, some of the PM-LIVE.COM team and I headed down to The Paradise Rock Club in Boston to catch Brother Ali, Evidence, Toki Wright & BK_ONE at the Fresh Air Tour.

The show was amazing, but the interview was beyond that, in my opinion. We had endless footage that covered a wide range of topics and we weren't able to put everything into this clip. Hopefully, in the coming weeks, we'll be able to share the rest of it in segments, but for now, enjoy this video.

Beyond: RIP Larry Sok

Energy between people is funny sometimes.

There are people that I've known for years, yet still feel distant from. And there are others that I've met and instantly feel connected and bonded to.

Larry was one of those people.

The best relationships, for me, are the ones that energize my spirit. The ones that make me smile and bring positivity to my day. The ones that motivate me to do more; to live more.

My connection with Larry did that and I know I'm not alone. I know that Larry made many peoples lives more full and more lively. And if I feel this way today, after only being friends with him for a relatively short time, I can only imagine the heart break that his long time friends & family are experiencing now.

Larry's body may have been laid to rest today, but a spirit such as his has no choice but to continue soaring. Hopefully the way he lived his physical days here on earth will motivate all who know him to live as he did, fully & with excitement.

This is not the end. It's simply Larry's transition into the next phase of his life.

He's simply traveled beyond.

The illest part about it was that they did it in such a way that you couldn't ignore it but it wasn't pretentious.

MIND ON YOUR MONEY: METHOD MAN ARRESTED FOR TAX EVASION

I know I'm a few days late on posting this information. You may or may not have heard...but Method Man was taken into police custody earlier this week awaiting arraignment on Tax Evasion charges. His Lincoln Navigator was repossessed by the department of taxation, after he failed to pay $52,503 in arrears.

This fact yielded a "damn...c'mon now, my dude" from me. We know you're making paper, Meth. How else would you be able to support your infamous marijuana habit? Is the bud SO crazy that you forgot the fact that you need to have an accountant AND pay your taxes?

I hate to see situations like this. It's messy as hell and something that you may expect from a less seasoned artist or celebrity, although it happens to the most successful, established artists around.

WELCOME HOME, SHYNE...?

Hip Hop artist, Shyne (Jamal Barrow) is expect to be released from prison today. Barrow was originally sentenced in June of 2001, in connection with the infamous 1999 shooting that involved Jennifer Lopez and Sean "P Diddy" Combs.

I just wanted to send some positive thoughts out today in anticipation of this talented brothers release from prison. I'm sure he has endless amounts of new material and I'm looking forward to hearing what's next for him.

UPDATE (10/6/09 -11:21pm)

I've been off line for most of the day and just sat down the computer. Appearently, Shynes release is currently under review. Representatives for the rapper informed MTV News that the Brooklyn MC is being detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement at an unspecified facility in Western New York State. Officials are determining whether or not to deport the rapper, who was born in Belize, a rep explained.

“Shyne is currently in federal custody while his future immigration status is determined,” the rep said in a message to MTV News. Shyne attorney Oscar Michelen emphasized to MTV News on Tuesday afternoon that Shyne has not been released, contrary to media reports.

As if serving 8 years of his life wasn't enough...smfh

R.I.P MR. MAGIC

The fact that hip hop as a culture is losing so many icons that serve as the foundation so frequently is alarming. The news of Mr. Magic's passing truly surprised me. Maybe its because we look at many of the artists and DJ's who have shaped the culture as "super-hero-esque"; untouchable elements that will be here forever. We know that they will live on through their music and contributions, long after their physical lives have ended, but that doesn't make their passing any easier to take.

I hope that everyone takes the time to appreciate those who have paved the way. Without them, many of us would have no path to walk.

A few days ago I had gotten the news of Roc Raida being in an accident. After the recent death of DJ AM, my first thought was "what is going on!? why are so many talented people being hurt or losing their lives".

Receiving the news that Roc Raider has past, as a result of that accident breaks my heart.

MOS DEF x TALIB KWELI x JAY ELECTRONICA x BOSTON ( Show Review*)

I know that the show was a few weeks ago, but better late than never...right? lol

Anyhow...

On September 8th, 2009 The Ecstatic Tour touched down at Boston's House of Blues and was welcomed by a sold out crowd.

Jay Electronica hit the stage first and brought it alive with the type of humours personality one may not have expected from such a serious lyricist. I was pleasantly surprised to witness the repour he built up with the crowd between songs, as he welcomed several people to join him during his set.

Next up, Talib Kweli who took off where Jay left off and KILLED it. At this point...the tone was set...everyone was eagerly awaiting the Mighty Mos. What followed was a little unexpected, but still enjoyable, in my opinion (various people would beg to differ, I know, but hey...this is my blog and this is my damn opinion...lol)

The lights dimmed...then slowly came back up, with a spotlight on an orange drum set to the right. Over walked Mos Def who then stood behind the drums and proceeded to rap & play simotaneously, with his two DJ's cutting and scratching, center stage. At this point, it was pretty clear that we were in for something "different". Me, personally...I'm all for different. There's nothing exciting or entertaining about standard things. Hip Hop shows are no exception and appearently Mos Def feels the same way.

As his set continued, with his birdcage microphone tightly grasped, he performed the songs that many of us love the most and as a tribute to Michael Jackson (leather loafer shoes and all), he fused many of MJ's classics with his own. The show was a healthy mix of new and old and was full of soul and artistc expression. He wasn't doing what he was "supposed to do", he rocked that show as he saw fit and those who were open-minded enough to enjoy it, did so.

Talib Kweli eventually joined Mos onstage for a Blackstar reunion of sorts, which brought back the feel hop classic 90's hip hop that we all miss and love so much. The chemestry that these two posess isn't often matched and their set left me longing for a second Blackstar album.

This show was an living example of musical progression, to me. It brought out the new (Jay Electronica), paid respect to the foundation (Michael Jackson tribute), revisted what we love (Blackstar) and brought us up to speed with where your creativity will take you if you aren't held back by commercial restraints.

This event also featured photography by 13th Witness, who's work can been seen in the Timberland Abington look book. Sounds were provided by Bobbito Garcia and Futura.

Greedy Person Sidenote: This party also featured some of THEE best hors d'oeuvres & strongest cocktails that I have ever eaten in my life. I left, totally satisfied on all levels : )

RELATIONSHIP THERAPY W/ MURS (Boston Show Review*)

Being the insatiable hip hop fan that I am, I wasn't about to allow complete physical and emotional exhaustion keep me from attending a show. After all, I'd worked hard to come up with the proper response to the Paradise Rock Club's tweet: Tell us why you LOVE the Murs and best answer will win a pair of tickets to their concert on Wednesday!!!

The person running The Paradise's twitter account may not have know that Murs was a solo artist, but it didn't matter to me...I was curious and I wanted those damn tickets. The fact that John Forte was also performing was a bonus.

I'd seen Murs on various Mtv Jams commercials, heard a few of his songs and always wondered exactly what his deal was.

I responded to the Paradise Rock Club's "tweet" and the next day I received a DM (direct message) informing me that I'd won tickets to the show (my response to their question was: @ParadiseRockClb : "I LOVE Murs b/c he has continued 2 remain true 2 HIMSELF creatively throughout his entire career, instead of conforming")

Fast forward to the night of the show...

I was tired. The evening before, I was sceaming at the top of my lungs at the House of Blues for the Ecstatic Tour (feat. Most Def, Talib Kweli & Jay Electronica)...and found myself expelling what was left of my energy well into the early hours of the morning with my "significant other"(let your imaginations run wild...)

I slept a total of 4 hours before waking up, only to have what was left of my positive energy pulled from my body before I'd even had time to welcome the new day.

By the time 6pm had rolled around, not just my body, but my soul ached. All day I'd been questioning whether or not I truly felt up to attend the show. The majority of my friends had gone to the Mos Def event the night before and were completely exhausted and the ones that hadn't gone to the show just didn't seem enthusiastic about checking for Murs.

As 7pm neared, I started to convince myself that it wouldn't be that big of a deal if I missed the show. But the fact that I'd gotten the tickets for free and had never seen Murs rock echoed in the back of my mind.

Around 7:50PM I jumped on the MBTA (Bostons train system) and made my way over to the Paradise, on some lonely only type sh*t...except I wasn't all that lonely.

I figured that I would either see someone I knew there or enjoy the show on my own and be free to appreciate it fully without having someone chit chatting in my ear about random things unrelated to the show.

I walked up to the ticket booth, gave the girl behind the glass my I.D and got my tickets. As soon as I turned around I was greeted by my good friend and fellow promoter, Edgard of So Good Entertainment. We talked for a moment and then walked into the club together. As we entered the main room John Forte was still on stage...acoustic guitar in hand, locks and lyrics flowing (ladies: he is even MORE beautiful in person that you can imagine and his voice is as soothing as the most warm bath water). I was happy to see that I hadn't missed him completely. He performed one more song and talked about how happy he was to be free again. The crowd cheered as he closed his set and welcomed Murs to the stage.

For those of you who may not have ever seen Murs live...it is truly an experience. He is full of energy, personality and LIFE.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but from the second he hit the stage it was ON.
His set included the songs "Silly Girl" (feat Joe Scudda), "Break Up (the OJ Song)", "The Pain", "Me & This Jawn", "Love and Appreciate II" and "A Part of Me". Each song detailed a vivid description of relationships and situations that Murs had experienced in the name of love and I truly found myself connecting to the songs, thinking "WORD!! I feel you on that, 110%".

Although I'd questioned even going to the show, at this point, I was really happy that'd I'd made it there... as a fan of music and as a person dealing with the ups and downs of relationships. It's interesting where you will find solice & insight...the sources are not always conventional. I never would have thought that I'd leave a Murs show feeling emotionally uplifted...but I did. And in addition to that, the show served a purpose that all shows should...it made me want to hear more of his music and learn more about him as an artist.

My bottom line is this: Murs is THAT dude. Who needs Dr. Phil or Dr. Drew...Murs is FAR more effective, less annoying and totally on point. Think I'm lying? Check the song below...lol

I know I fell off from posting entries over the last week and a half. My apologies to anyone who was checking the blog and seeing no updates.

I figured I'd dedicate this weeks Throwback Thursday to Michael Jackson. It's one week after his death and I really should have put this posting together LAST Thursday, but it took a little time for the impact of what happen to really resonate with me, as I mentioned in an entry that I mad yesterday

Below, I have listed my favorite (top 5) Michael Jackson video's from childhood. These videos are THE ONES that I loved and watched, start to finish, EVERY time they came on MTV at my grandparents house (since we didn't have cable at my house for an ILL minute).

The PURE joy that is expressed in Michael's face, during certain dancing scenes in "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" is exactly the I felt and STILL feel, any time I hear one of these songs.

If more artists could find that place within themselves, the spot that houses their TRUE emotion, and pull from there to create music...the industry might have a better chance of producing a new generation of iconic talents.

Just a thought.

I'm still having a hard time grasping the reality that Michael Jackson has left us. I can say with complete honesty that he was the first artist that I TRULY was a fan of, from a very young age.

His was the first poster that I ever hung on my wall, the first music videos that I really danced to, the first artist that I was excited to hear ANY and EVERYTHING about.

I hope that he finds in rest what he struggled to capture during his life on earth, and that is peace.

With all the fame and notoriety he had, it seemed as though people looked at him as more of a "thing"...an icon...than a person, but he was a human being at the end of the day. He was a father, a brother, a son.

I don't even know what else to say right now.

These dudes have been doing in FOREVER and I question the judgment of anyone who fails to acknowledge their contribution to hip hop. I'm not going to go IN and write up the history of The Beastie Boys right now...but those of you who are uninformed should def do your research. They're without a doubt more hip hop that your favorite current rapper. I'll put money on that...LOL

I believe this goes without saying...but Wu-Tang birthed more legendary hip hop icons than any other movement of the 90's. Collectively, their discography holds endless classic singles AND albums. And no one has been able to come close to what they've done since.

I know I show Wu CRAZY love on this blog...but what can I say? You can't ignore the obvious. I'm a purist and these dudes are pure, raw hip hop ALL DAY, EVERY DAY.

Raekwon's "Incarcerated Scarfaces" is just one of the MANY songs that hip hop heads will be rocking for YEARS.

I can't wait for OB4CL2 to drop!

In my opinion, NWA was the ultimate West Coast super-group. Each member possessed talented that they could easily display on their own (solo). The music that they contributed to hip hop was ground breaking and broke down many barriers that todays hip hop artists have the luxury of avoiding.

Curtis - War Angel LP (Mixtape)

Curtis is back...not that he really left, but you know what I mean. War Angel is Mr. Jackson's latest offering of mixtape tracks. I'm listening to this for the first time as I type...so I can't tell you if I love it or hate it just yet. I can say that the production is hitting thus far (I'm only on track 3*). I can also say that so far, I have heard 3 or 4 "reminders" that he is indeed rich (for those of us who may have forgotten, I assume), 3 random "growls" , 3 R&B-ish hooks sung by Curtis and 1 Bobby Brown lyric reference for good measure. I'm just happy to have a new cd to mean mug to...lol

All jokes aside, this seems like a solid mixtape, which should be no surprise...we all know this is 50's forte.

The Geto Boys (consisting of Scarface, Willie D and Bushwick Bill) formed in late 1980's, hailing from Houston TX and could easily be described as one of hip hops first hard core groups, discussing some pretty "interesting" things in their lyrics. This song is one of their best, in my opinion, but one that many people forget about.

MAX B'S WAVE CRASHES WITH GUILTY VERDICT... (Updated*)

Max B, formerly of Byrd Gang was found guilty (on 9 of 11 counts), this morning in a robbery that left one man dead. His rep has confirmed that this is factual, although details on how much time he will serve have yet to be reviled.

Case accusations state that Max B was the ringleader in a $30,000 heist that targeting two wealthy men, along with his step brother, Kelvin Leerdam and his girlfriend, Gina Conway, who was the prosecutions key witness in the case, testifying against Max in return for a less serious sentencing.

I will update this posting with new details as they are confirmed.

UPDATE - Max B's lawyer, Gerald Saluti, released the following statement:

“Max B would like to first thank all his family, friends and fans that have supported him throughout this trial. Please don’t give up on him at this point. Although the jury has spoken and Max has been convicted of felony murder, kidnapping, robbery and conspiracy a swift and successful appeal shall follow. It is inconceivable that a jury would convict Max under the facts presented by the State. Even Gina Conway the State’s own witness testified that Max knew nothing of a robbery.Ms. Conway, a jilted lover and proven liar, said so at the trial itself. Max said after the verdict was read that he is confident that justice will eventually be served and he will be free. Max intends to continue putting out music for his fans while the appeal process grinds along. Although shocked by the verdict, Max remained grateful.”

I've been a fan of Cyrpess Hill since they dropped their self-titled album in 1991. I won't say how old I was...I will say I had no business walking around the house, sing-rapping "Stoned Is The Way of The Walk"...but I did...haha.

When "Black Sunday" came out a couple of years later, I was a bonafied super-fan, complete with giant Cypress posters on my walls and a full fledged crush on DJ Muggs (who is still one of my favorite producers).

I always looked at Cypress as ground breaking. What B-Real, Sen Dog, DJ Muggs and Eric Bobo did will never be duplicated. They were an establishment and that's something that the game is truly missing right now.

Ok, I promise this isn't going to turn into a (complete) confession of my undying love for Travis Barker (although I DO love this dude and that love was TOTALLY intensified after listening to this project...lol).

but I digress...

The point of this entry is to inform you that Travis and DJ AM aka TRV$DJAM have dropped their latest mixtape, "Fix Your Face Vol. 1 - Coachella", which features the fusion of Travis on the drums and DJ AM on the turntables, remixing everything from Michael Jackson to Metallica; There's something for everyone on there. The mixtape is available to download for free. All you have to do is log onto twitter and retweet their message about the cd (check the end of this posting for the link to do so*)

I don't think there are many words that can properly explain how ILL the combination is. AM is an amazing DJ and Travis Barker ( of Blink 182 & +44) is one of our generations most talented percusionists, in my opinon. I had the chance to catch +44 live in Boston about 3 years ago. Travis had just had surgery on his right arm / wrist, which was in a cast at the time. This man played the entire show and KILLED it, with one hand. I had BEEN a fan before then, but I know he gained some new ones that night.

You have to respect those involved with music who develope their skills, then flip it into something that no one else is doing...and then rock it until the wheels fall off. TRV$DJAM have seen success and lived through tragedy and still continue to keep it moving.

Ok, I can't front...when I logged into my email account and saw the press release for this project, my initial reaction was "Seriously?!?" It was a feeling of both confusion and surprise...LOL

This isn't because I'm not a fan of MC Hammer (please believe I had the Hammer doll, assorted pairs of Hammer Pants and even won several dance contests, as a child, with the song "HammerTime" blaring in the background); I was just a little thrown off by the combination of Mick Boogie and MC Hammer. I've been lucky enough to host a party with Mick, here in Boston, so I've seen him do his thing live and I'm a huge fan of his mixtape projects. He's always doing something fresh and I'm sure this cd will be one that everyone will enjoy once it drops.

Mick Boogie Teams up with 90's Icon MC Hammer for Latest Mixtape Project

New York, NY - Mick Boogie and thepressplayshow.com are proud to announce details on their newest project, Hammertime, hosted by MC Hammer. The mixtape contains Hammer's classics as well as the samples from which they came, and some present day remixes.

On Hammertime, Mick Boogie takes you on a ride through the past, present, and future, using the original samples to intro some of Hammers biggest hits, as well as a few new remixes of Hammer's most memorable records. Man...the last 2 weeks were something else. My hard drive passed away (R.I.P) and I was forced to be without my baby (aka my Mac) for what seemed like an eternity. During this time, I discovered that I am TOTALLY dependent up my tech devices and that's scary. I also discovered that if you can't say anything nice, you truly should not say anything at all. Sticks and stones may break your bones, but words break hearts.

Anyhow, I KNOW I missed a bunch of ish. I wasn't able to post about the epic rocking of Charles Hamilton's jaw or about that home wrecker Rihanna, seen in New York City with my husband aka Drake...LOL

But I'm back now...so we'll return to the madness which is The Restless Mind, tomorrow.
